Protein Bars

Sometimes its easy to lump all the food bars together into one category, and many people assume that they must all be pretty similar in nutritional benefits, or that packaged food such as this musnt be any good for you. This couldnt be further from the truth.

In order to get a fast hit of quality protein after or before a workout, or on the run, a protein bar is a really good option. They are small and punch way above their weight for the amount of protein that they contain. That is, if your eating the good ones!

And this doesnt just mean that the bars you need to be eating should taste like garbage or chaff! There are many flavours that are all great, and one of the most popular is chocolate.

They key to remember, is to choose a protein bar that has a decent amount of protein by weight, and to do this you need to consult and read the ingredients list on the packet. Avoid anything with over 25% sugar and at best, go for sugar free ones.

The other thing you should be careful of, is that incorporating these bars into your diet, should not replace a proper meal. They are fine as a compliment to your food, but dont get tricked into thinking that you can completely replace a meal with one. They simply dont contain all your body needs for a complete body building fix.

As far as protein content goes, be sure to select bars with a good amount of protein. The Met-RX protein bar is a good one that I foten keep on hand. It packs a full 32g of protein per bar, and tastes fine as well.

Another tip of mine, that I learnt from the 'No Nonsense Muscle Building' book, by Vince Delmonte, is that you should drink an appropriate amount of water while eating or just after eating a protein bar. Being a shelf item and not fresh, bars are devoid of moisture to preserve them while they sit. In order to get the best result, water is needed with them to help digest and transport the goodness of them around the body.

All in all, incorporate these bars if they suit your lifestyle, but never use them as a complete replacement for your total diet program, as you wont see the results you hope for on just protein bars alone!
